Friday, 8:15am, Seoul, Korea.
Whew, ok, finally got a chance to blog. It's been a crazy week. So dear friends, lemme update you on what's going on in my life...
"What do you mean the plane can't fly?"
Well, it was a long 18 hour transit between SFO and my hotel room. I had a 1:50 flight out of SFO with United and things went well. Hey, they were flying me business class so there's nothing to complain! Sweet deal! Just as we're all seated, and got our seat belts buckled and ready to taxi out to the runway, the speaker went on: "Pshhhhh....uh, this is the captain speaking here...sorry but there's some...pshhhh...on the underside of the plane....our crew is checking it out but we will not be flying to Narita with this plane...I'm sorry about this...we do have an auxiluary plane which will be in gate 98. Because we have to prepare that plane it will take off at 4pm....sorry." Ok, so I paraphased. I was thinking, don't tell me you just checked that just as we're leaving! And stay here for 2 more hours? and deplane? And then I saw out of my window 2 united crew workers driving in a golf cart, and proceeded to the underbelly of the plane with a digital camera. Uh...ok, I guess taking another plane is fine...
I do have to say that the rest of the flight was great. I'm not jetlagged at all. The best part was flying between narita and Seoul. I got a seat in the upper deck of the plane and I could see the cockpit and the pilots checking their instruments....dang, that's some sophisticated equipment they got there! But it was cool to have a small upper deck cabin...feels really different...Anyway, we finally arrived at Incheon airport outside of Seoul...it took them 1 1/2 hrs to get the cell phones ready, but it's cool, cuz I was taking a nap on the bench anyway. Then we got on a bus and went to our hotel....It's been a long trip, but hey, England v. Korea was on TV as well as game 2 of the Lakers/Kings series, so you know, I HAD to watch them...wound up going to bed at 3am...
World Cup FEVER!!!!
The moment we arrived in Seoul World Cup Fever was in full effect. They make sure that the 1st ad you notice when you exit the gate is a world cup ad. Then you procede to immigration and was greeted by like 20 worldcup banners. You drive around the city and there, on the tallest skyscraper in Seoul, was a gigantic ad for Korea Telecom and the World Cup. I watch tv and everyone was talking about the England/Korea soccer match that night. In fact, they showed the game in its entireity 3 times...I saw the game at 1am in the morning. It's nice, because in America when we're working on the site, we really didn't know how much the world cup matters to the rest of the world. Here they have world cup coverage around the clock, promos at 7-11, dept. stores, etc. I got my accreditation the next day so that I can work at the international media center and wow, that's when it all sinks in, that I'm sooooooo lucky to be able to work on this project. To be able to go to Korea, work on a site which millions and millions have been and will continue to go to during the games...and to be at the heart of it, in Seoul, and maybe be able to go to some of the games myself...it's such a treat...I thank God for being able to be here. It's been a blessing all along...
Time for some Seoul Food!
So needless to say, I was really looking forward to the food here. And it definitely was a treat! So far I've had a delicious Bulgulgi Bibimbap (sliced beef with mixed rice and vegetables), chicken galbi, some sort of seafood that I don't recognize but I trust my coworker roomate on that, and just right now I went down to get some street food for like a dollar. It's alllllll good! Tonight we'll have a traditional korean dinner followed by karaoke. And then yesterday I just found out that we're going to a rave party next friday as part of the opening night of the World Cup! Dude, fatboy slim will be there spinning the 1's and 2's....sweet!
Okay, I got a meeting in 1/2 hr. I'm eating lunch with Drew and his friend today. I think I'm gonna dye my hair...stay tuned... :)
