My current top 5 favorite cities, in no particular order:
Overlooking Zurich from the top of the hill. It's such a serene view. Hearing the church bells ring even when they're like a mile away because the city is so peaceful and the houses all look like toyhouses, lined up neatly around the lake and the river which goes through the heart of the city. The public transportation is so beautifully done and the city is designed around people, not cars. I'd take being able to walk in an alley past some people eating outside the restaurant and pause to see the street performers and seeing people chat and mill around a fountain over driving on the freeway any day. Then again, I'm sure everyone would agree with me on that one.
Tokyo, with all it's vibrancy, it's ordered chaos. Glamourized technology shown throughout the city, from the neon signs in ginza and shibuya to pachinko parlors and vending machines that glow in a dark street. I dunno, maybe it's just interesting to me. Transportation that works like clockwork, people milling around after midnight, the sounds, the visuals, make the city such a living creature. By the way if you haven't seen Lost in Translation, do yourself a favor and go watch it.
San Francisco and the bay area. It is very rare to find a place so blessed with beautiful geography and weather. From overlooking the Golden Gate bridge and the city from the Marin Headlands, to driving near embarcadero and treasure island, to being a relatively short distance from Napa, Lake Tahoe, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Yosemite, Big Sur, it's just so amazing. Add to that all the diverse neighborhoods, from Noe, Mission, Inner Sunset, Haight, Marina, North Beach, Japantown, Diamond Heights, Market St, Embarcadero, etc. Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville, Palo Alto all within a short drive away. The fog rolling in from Skyline on the 280. If only the housing prices would come down and chinese food be better, then it'll be pretty much as good as it gets. :)
New York of course. Ok, so I've never lived there so all my experiences come from being an outsider but there's so much culture and things all happening at once. I like watching all the people in the subways and meeting all the ambitious people there. They have like the treasure chest of the world in the Met and guggenheim. Central park looks so nice when it's covered in fresh snow. And oh yeah, being able to eat a greasy falafel sandwich by a street corner at 11pm at night is cool too.
The view of Hong Kong Harbor at night, with all the lights and glitter of the crowded line of skyscrapers along the harbor and glowing neon signs reflecting off the water. It really is the pearl of the Orient. That is the best place and feeling in the world being able to take a stroll at Tsim Sha Tsui. Then again, of course, I'm biased. :)
